The dashas are esteemed to indicate when the celestial bodies will generate positive or negative effects based on their zodiac signs, house, conjunctions, and aspects according to their location in an individual’s horoscope.

For example, a Shani Mahadasha lasting 19 years can lead to a life with discipline, honesty, justice and karma when the Shani’s placement in one’s horoscope is favourable. However, when Shani is positioned alongside malefic planets in the horoscope, it may exhibit adverse effects.

Dashas hold significant importance in our lives, with deep conditions for us. It is very important to determine one’s dasha, monitor its effect, both positive and negative and act accordingly.

The timing and duration of Dashas are determined by complex mathematical calculations, based on the position of the Moon at the time of birth in one’s chart. The initial dasha period is known as Mahadasha, which usually lasts longer, followed by sub-periods known as Antardasha of other planets.

Significance of Dasha

Dashas significantly impact our daily lives, as it has ability to narrate individuals’ complete sequence of life, including good and bad. It has a tendency to tell when we have to go through pain and when we will enjoy the moments of joy.

Types of Dasha

Vimshottari Dasha – It is the most used dasha system in the modern world. It is widely considered the most accurate system. This system relies on nakshatras, with the nakshatra in which the Moon is positioned at birth determining an individual’s nakshatra. The ruling planet of that nakshatra presides over the Mahadasha. The time duration of each Mahadasha is as follows:-

  • Sun – 6 years
  • Moon – 10 years
  • Venus – 20 years
  • Mars – 7 years
  • Jupiter – 16 years
  • Rahu – 18 years
  • Ketu – 7 years
  • Saturn – 19 years
  • Mercury – 17 years

Yogini Dasha – A unique and ancient approach to calculating Dasha, the Yogini Dasha system revolves around eight Yoginis, female deities associated with the eight phases of the Moon. Each Yogini presides over a specific duration of the Dasha period, ranging from 1 to 8 years. The total span of the Yogini Dasha system encompasses 36 years, constituting one-third of the Vimshottari Dasha system. This system is particularly adept at predicting short-term life events and trends. The eight yoginis are:-

  • Mangala
  • Pingala
  • Dhanya
  • Bhramari
  • Bhadrika
  • Ulka
  • Siddha
  • Sankata

Chara Dasha – The Chara Dasha system is a relatively new and advanced Dasha system in Vedic astrology. It is based on the Rashi or the zodiac signs and is considered a more event-oriented Dasha system. It provides insights into key events and circumstances of one’s life.
