Wayanad landslides: Over 300+ people dead, 210 bodies recovered while 84 still injured

Wayanad | August 3: More than 300 people lost their lives and 84 people are still injured after the two massive landslides hit the Meppadi areas of the Wayanad district of Kerala on July 30.

As many as 210 bodies have been recovered while 187 people have been discharged from the hospital after receiving proper treatment.

According to the officials, 210 bodies and 134 body parts have been recovered out of which 96 were males, 85 were females and 29 were children.

Meanwhile, a total of 146 bodies have been identified by the relatives while the administration have done post-mortem of around 207 bodies and 134 body parts.

Around 273 people were injured in the incident, out of which 187 people have been discharged and 84 people are still recieving treatment in the different hospitals in Wayanad, Mallapuram and Kozikhode.

Wayanad’s former MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday visited the landslide-hit areas of the Wayanad.

After his visit, Rahul Gandhi declared that Congress will build around 100 houses for the affected people in Wayanad, as Kerala has never seen such a devastating disaster.

Total two landslides occurred in a row, one at around 2 am in Mundakkai and second at around 4.30 am in Chooralmala on July 30, which brought mud and debris into the Chooralmala town and also resulted in the overflow of the Eruvazhanji river due to which the river changed its course through the middle of the way and wreaked havoc in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala.
