Wayanad Landslides: Death toll reaches 167, 219 injured

Wayanad | July 31: In a tragic and unimaginable incident that occurred after the massive landslides in Meppadi area of Wayanad district of Kerala, around 167 people lost their lives and around 219 individuals have been brought to the hospital.

According to sources from the Department of Information and Public Relations (PRD) Control Room in Wayanad, 96 victims have been identified, which includes 77 men, 67 women, and 22 children.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday informed that the rescue operations in Wayanad district are continuing at full scale and around 1,592 people have been rescued and rehabilitated to the relief camps.

Total two landslides occurred in a row, one at around 2 am in Mundakkai and second at around 4.30 am in Chooralmala on July 30, which brought mud and debris into the Chooralmala town and also resulted in the overflow of the Eruvazhanji river due to which the river changed its course through the middle of the way and wreaked havoc in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala.

Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are involved in the rescue and search operation and is working tirelessly to save the lives of the people of Wayanad.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged people to donate some funds in the CMDRF (Chief Minister Distress Relief Fund) to help saving the lives. Along with that, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha LoP and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi have also affirmed every possible financial and physical support to the public of Wayanad and the Kerala Government.

Meanwhile, just after the incident, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert of rainfall in the district.

It is to be noted that Wayanad from July 23 to July 30 has received more than above rainfall, with around 500 millimeters of rainfall.

Along with Wayanad, the landslides have also hit the Kozhikode district of Kerala.
