Gangtok (Sikkim) | June 14: At least nine people are dead and almost 1200 tourists, including 15 foreigners are stranded due to two deadly landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in the Mangan district of the Sikkim.
The natural calamity damaged the public properties including roads, bridges and disrupted supplies of power, food, electricity, road connectivity and many more.
The Chief Secretary of Sikkim, Vijay Bhusan Pathak in a press conference on Friday, said, “In the duration of past three days, Sikkim has witnessed 2 natural calamities of landslide in Namchi district which claimed lives of three individuals and a landslide on June 12 and 13 in Mangan district in which six people lost their lives.”
He further said that around 1200-1400 tourists might be stucked in the area due to the landslides.
He urged for support from the central government and asked air force to help them in evacuation of tourists.
The Chief Secretary mentioned, “We have sent the requisition for Air Force helicopters on behalf of the Sikkim government. As soon as the weather becomes suitable for flying, the evacuation of tourists will start.”
He further added that relief funds will be provided to the families of deceased individuals and treatment expenses of severely injured will be taken care of by Sikkim Government.
