Breaking News: Delhi’s Air Quality becomes ‘severe’, AQI stands at 441
New Delhi | December 18: The air pollution has worsened in Delhi nearly after a month, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital has reached to the ‘severe’ category with a dense layer of fog engulfing the city.
According to the data of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in Delhi recorded at 1 pm was 441.
It is to be noted that initially the air quality was worsened post Diwali and was reeling under ‘severe’ and ‘severe plus’ category for several days. However, it went down after the imposition of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) 3 and 4.

But the government and Supreme Court’s decision to lift the GRAP 4, turned out to be hazardous for the people of the Delhi, as the AQI in Delhi started becoming ‘poor’, ‘very poor’, ‘severe’ and now ‘severe plus’.
As per the data of the CPCB, the current AQI, as of 1 pm in Anand Vihar is 485, Ashok Vihar is 460, Bawana is 436, Dwarka Sector 8 is 451, IGI Airport T3 is 424, ITO 465, Lodhi Road 401, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is 443, Mundka is 456, Narela is 437, Okhla Phase 2 is 466, Patparganj is 470, Punjabi Bagh is 462, RK Puram is 464, Sri Aurobindo Marg is 418 and Wazirpur is 475, categorized as ‘severe’ and ‘severe plus’.
However, the AQI of Chandani Chowk was registered at 1 pm is 380, categorized as ‘very poor’.

An AQI between 0-50 is categorized as ‘Good’ with minimal impact, 51-100 is ‘Satisfactory’ with minor breathing discomfort to sensitive people, 101-200 is ‘Moderate’ with breathing discomfort to the people with lungs, asthma and heart diseases.
While the AQI between 201-300 is categorized as ‘Poor’ with breathing discomfort to most people on prolonged exposure, 301-400 as ‘Very Poor’ with respiratory illness on prolonged exposure, 401-500 as ‘Severe’ that affects healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases.
GRAP 4 is in effect in the entire Delhi and NCR since December 16 after the air quality deteriorated in the region.
This decision was taken during the emergency meeting of the Sub-Committee of CAQM (Commission for Air Quality Management) after the AQI of Delhi surpassed the mark of 400. Initially the committee imposed GRAP 3, but the AQI surpassed the 400 mark, they eventually implemented the GRAP 4.
On December 16, the AQI was reported as 399 at 9 PM and crossed into the severe zone at 401 by 10 PM, as per the data of the CPCB.
GRAP is a set of emergency measures that is implemented in the Delhi-NCR to fight with the intense air pollution, based on the category of the air quality.
Under GRAP 4, an 8-point action plan is designed to mitigate the deteriorating pollution. There is a complete ban on construction activities, including public projects such as highways and power lines. The entry of non-essential diesel trucks into Delhi is also banned. Vehicles carrying essential goods or running on LNG, CNG, electric, or BS-VI diesel are exempted.
There is also a mandatory shifting of school to hybrid mode, with the exceptions being classes X and XII.
