Dobermans are legal to own as pets, and many people in India keep Dobermans for companionship and as guard dogs due to their intelligence, loyalty, and protective nature. However, pet ownership laws and regulations vary by state or city. For example, after a rigorous attack by dog in 2022, multiple cities of India such as Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, etc. banned certain breeds to dog and they aren’t allowed to breed in the cities. It includes Doberman too.

This glossy and black appearance Doberman are banned due to their territorial and aggressive nature and are considered a restricted breed in certain areas.

Apart from it, several other breeds are restricted to keep as pet in multiple tier-1 cities of India. Some are mentioned below:-

  • Pit Bulls – Many individuals unknowingly keep this dog as a pet at their home, but Pit Bulls, including the American Pit Bull Terrier and the Bull Terrier, are among the breeds banned in several states in India. These dogs, due to their muscular appearance often stereotyped as aggressive. Concerns about their potential for harm to humans and other animals have led to their prohibition in various regions.
  • Dogo Argentino – Due to its rare presence, the Dogo Argentino is banned in several states. This large and powerful breed is known for its hunting abilities and strong protective instincts, which can be perceived as a potential threat.
  • Rottweilers – Known for their strength and loyalty, Rottweilers are also on the list of banned breeds in some Indian states. Their protective instincts and powerful physique can make them potentially dangerous, especially if not properly trained and socialized.
  • German Shepherds – Commonly known for their aggressive nature, German Shepherds exude versatility and trainability. They are not banned nationwide, but some states have restrictions on owning them. These restrictions are often in place due to concerns about their guarding instincts and potential aggression.
  • Boxers – This playful and energetic breed is banned in some states due to their muscular build and perceived aggressive tendencies. Like other banned breeds, responsible ownership and proper training can help discard any potential issues.
  • Boerboels – Boerboes carry enigmatic charisma with them, appear impressive, filled with confidence and immense power. Their enduring stand out and fierceness is the reasons for them being avoided as pets, as their size and strength necessitate experienced owners.
  • Wolf Dog – As the name suggests, wolf dogs are a hybrid of a domestic dog and a grey wolf, eastern wolf, red wolf, or Ethiopian wolf, which represent a unique blend of genetic characteristics. These creatures exhibit fewer distinct behaviour patterns compared to other breeds. Their innate intelligence makes them remarkably self-aware of their surroundings and persisting wolf dogs can result in a challenging task.
  • Neapolitan Mastiff – The Neapolitan Mastiff, characterized by its loose and wrinkled skin, is another breed that faces restrictions in certain states. Their flaky appearance and humungous size contribute to fears and concerns about their suitability as pets.
