New Delhi | 27 August: In a surprising twist in the Greater Noida dowry murder case, Nikki Bhati’s sister-in-law, Minakshi, has made her own claims of dowry harassment. Minakshi is the estranged wife of Nikki’s brother, Rohit Payla.

Minakshi’s Claims of Dowry Harassment

Minakshi and Rohit, both 31, were married in 2016. She alleges that her family gave a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz car as part of the dowry. However, according to Minakshi, her in-laws—who are also Nikki’s parents—considered the car “inauspicious” and sold it.

They then reportedly demanded a new Scorpio SUV and a large amount of cash. When Minakshi’s family could not meet this demand, she claims she was sent back to her parents’ home.

Minakshi says she was frequently beaten for dowry and was not allowed to have a mobile phone. Her husband, Rohit, was often away from home for long periods. Although she lived with his family for nine years, she has been at her parents’ home for the last 14 months. She also mentioned that in a community meeting, her in-laws were ordered to pay her ₹35 lakhs, but they never did.

According to the police, the footage is part of the ongoing probe but emphasised that its verification has not yet been proved.

Greater Noida Dowry Death Case: The suspected dowry-related murder of Nikki Bhati continues to unfold, with new information which has recently emerged. Nikki Bhati was allegedly set ablaze by her husband, Vipin Bhati, in Sirsa village, Greater Noida, on August 21.

A hospital memo from the day of incident has emerged, where family members of the accused have claimed that Nikki suffered injuries due to a cylinder blast, news agency PTI said.

Reportedly, the memo from Fortis Hospital, where Nikki was taken first, states in Hindi: “Ghar par gas cylinder fatne se mareej ko kaafi gambheer roop se jal gaya hai” (The patient has suffered severe burn injuries due to a gas cylinder explosion at home).” It also notes that Devendra, a relative (bua’s son), brought her to the hospital, in critical condition. A hospital memo typically records the reason for admission and should not be confused with a post-mortem report or a doctor’s investigation.

It may be noteworthy that Nikki was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where she succumbed to her injuries while being shifted from Fortis Hospital, Noida.

The Nikki Bhati Murder Case

These new claims come just after Nikki’s brother, Rohit, and her sister-in-law, Minakshi, were arrested in connection with the dowry murder of Nikki Bhati.

Nikki’s family alleges she was brutally tortured and killed by her husband, Vipin Bhati, and his family, who demanded a dowry of ₹36 lakhs. They claim she was beaten, dragged by her hair, and then set on fire.
