New Delhi | May 27: Bollywood, the heartbeat of the Indian film industry appeared to have diminished status around 2020 due to COVID-19, but 2023 emerged as a boon to the film industry and resurrected its legacy to weave stories that resonate with millions of people From experiencing setbacks to major comebacks, the year 2023 was not less than a roller coaster for Bollywood!

2023 embarked on its journey with the movie Pathaan which broke the record of all previous movies and created a new benchmark by acquiring Rs500 crore in net box-office collections. Followed by Gadar 2, Jawan moved one step ahead in this sequence by redefining the benchmark. Over time, this series marked continuation and reached its finale with the success of Animal and the ferocious clash of Dunki and Salaar.

Major Comebacks

Since the initiation of 2023, one prominent trend that caught everyone’s attention was the significant comebacks in the film industry. While Shah Rukh Khan redefined his cinematic kingship with movies like “Pathaan” and “Jawan,” but the year was notably dedicated by experts to Bobby Deol and his family. Years after struggling, Bobby finally received the acknowledgement he had deserved. Unlike other star kids, it took 30 years for success to touch Bobby’s fate, win over people and build a fan base. Although, he got recognition a few years back for the web series Asharam, but it was only the movie Animal which forced people to love him more. In an interview with PTI, he stated, “he knew he had worked for 15 days only and it’s a short role but he wasn’t expecting this humungous affection from the public”.

Sunny Deol, an actor turned politician, was once again gambling with movies like Gadar 2, but this time what he really achieved was immense success and love from the publics. The recent appearance of Sunny and Bobby on Koffee With Karan 8 was notably open and honest, marking their return to the show after a gap of 18 years. During their conversation with Johar, Sunny, who is typically reserved, openly discussed the success of the Gadar franchise and the challenges he encountered after the release of his debut film. He stated, “I was taking on various film projects, but things started getting more challenging when it wasn’t getting ‘my-type’ scripts”. Along with these two sons, Dharmendra Paaji also marked his return with a successful film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani’.

Setbacks Faced

While a bunch of individuals in the film industry experienced success and fortune, others faced misfortune. Movies like “Adipurush,” “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar,” and “Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan” turned into disastrous ventures, receiving significant backlash from both the public and critics. These films have the potential to turn the love for cinema into a nightmare for movie enthusiasts. Additionally, despite the box office success, “Animal” garnered an overwhelming amount of hate and controversies, possibly tarnishing the reputation of director Sandeep Reddy. The film’s negative reception could have a lasting impact on how he is perceived in the industry.

Conclusion

Movies like “12th Fail,” “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” “OMG 2,” and “Dunki” garnered exceptional acclaim from film critics, with “12th Fail” even achieving the status of the highest-rated Indian movie on IMDb. The roller coaster ride of Bollywood in 2023 can be attributed to the significant financial transactions and controversies within the industry. Despite the ups and downs, cinephiles were treated by a plethora of films in 2023 that not only captured their hearts but also left them thoroughly satisfied.
