New Delhi | December 9: Delhi Elections has always been a topic of “hot-talk”. With this, the bugle of the assembly elections has been triumphed in Delhi, as parties like Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have kicked off their election campaigning with their purported blame games on each other.
But the larger question that remains is when this election will be held in the national capital? As per reports and last elections assessment, the assembly elections in Delhi are likely to be held in February 2025. However, the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the dates of polls on 70 seats Delhi’s legislative assembly.
The last assembly polls were held in February 2020, where the ruling Aam Aadmi Party clinched a massive victory, with the party securing 63 seats out of 70. The BJP managed to seven seats while the Congress party was unable to open their account.
The results of 2015 Delhi assembly elections were somewhat similar to that of 2020 one or maybe vice versa. In 2015, AAP clinched an absolute majority with winning record 67 seats out of 70. The so-called national parties BJP won 3 seats while Congress won 0 seats.
However, it was almost 10 years ago. In the last 10 years, the national capital has witnessed a several events that have created a sentiment of anti-incumbency. In these last 10 years, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia resigned from the post of Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively.
Arvind Kejriwal was sent to jail in the alleged liquor scam of Delhi. He was arrested by both Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of India (CBI). Former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was also arrested in the same case. Apart from it, several other leaders of the party were sent to jail, including Satyendra Jain, Kailash Gehlot, Amanatullah Khan, etc.
However, the party has recently faced a major setback as senior party leader Kailash Gehlot resigned and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, citing several concerns, including party’s neglecting focus towards development while increasing focus towards the politicization.
AAP-BJP has been in a major scuffle in the national capital, which is very evident to the citizens of Delhi. In the last Lok Sabha elections of 2024, the BJP clinched all seven seats, but the thing is, the situation was persisting in 2015 also, but later, the party couldn’t manage to win assembly polls.
AAP has announced their candidates on 11 seats of Chhatarpur, Kiradi, Vishwas Nagar, Rohtash Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Badarpur, Seelampur, Seemapuri, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar and Matiala seats.
From AAP – Brahm Singh Tanwar from Chhatarpur, Anil Jha from Kiradi, Deepak Singla from Vishwas Nagar, Sarita Singh from Rohtash Nagar, BB Tyagi from Laxmi Nagar, Ram Singh Netaji from Badarpur, Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad from Seelampur, Veer Singh Dhingan from Seemapuri, Gaurav Sharma from Ghonda, Manoj Tyagi from Karawal Nagar and Sumesh Shokeen from Matiala.
Amidst these developments, it is believed that the BJP has come to a strong position in Delhi, as the lack of accountability of the Delhi government and negligence of their issues, such as water shortage, air pollution, cleanliness, drainage, roads, infrastructure, etc have created an anti-incumbent sentiment among citizens.
BJP has already launched its “auto campaign” to consolidate its position and garner support from the people of the national capital while the AAP has launched its “Revdi Pe Charcha” campaign to target the BJP and underline its Delhi’s government’s welfare schemes ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.
Currently, the citizens of the territory are waiting for the official announcement of the dates of the polls from the poll body Election Commission of India. The Commission is likely to announce the poll dates very soon.
