Supaul | August 1: In a shocking incident, a five-year-old nursery student brought a firearm to St. Joseph School and shot a 10-year-old classmate during the morning assembly in Supaul distrcit of Bihar on July 31, 2024.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 9 AM.
The young assailant had concealed the gun in his bag before using it to shoot the older student, who is currently hospitalized but out of danger, having been struck in the arm.
Superintendent of Police, Shaishav Yadav, is leading the investigation to determine how the nursery student accessed the firearm and managed to bring it to the school located in the Lalpatti area under Triveniganj police station jurisdiction.
“We are in the early stages of the investigation, trying to determine if the weapon is licensed and how it ended up in the child’s possession. We will take appropriate action based on our findings,” said Yadav, as reported by IANS.
In response to the incident, the police are enforcing stringent bag checks across schools in the district to prevent similar occurrences.
The principal of the school has been arrested for negligence, and police are actively searching for the young shooter and his father, who fled the scene with the firearm after the incident was discovered.
This event has caused significant distress among parents, prompting protests for better security measures at the school. The police are working to reassure the community and restore order, with additional security forces deployed to the area.
Superintendent Yadav emphasized the gravity of the security lapse and confirmed that further actions are being considered against the school administration to prevent future incidents.
