New Delhi | july 9: A question who’s answering might end up as a very complex statement. Hitting upon reality, in this era, literally, anyone can be an influencer. Don’t get screwed, this statement may lack rigid witness and there are various evidences. In simple words (Pulling you out of imagination), defining an influencer might end up as a tricky task, as in this digital era, where social media is making you more social (or maybe more anti-social), any person with some great efforts can be an influencer. The term influencer has become ubiquitous in the digital age.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, an influencer is “a person or thing that influences another”. However, this broad definition does not capture the nuances and complexities of the concept of influencer in the context of digital media.

In the early days of the Internet, influencers were mainly experts, authorities, or celebrities who had established credibility and popularity in their respective fields or industries. With the advent and proliferation of social media platforms, such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, the landscape of influence changed dramatically. Influencers were no longer limited by their expertise, authority, or fame, but by their ability to create engaging, authentic, and relatable content that resonated with their followers. Influencers became content creators, storytellers, or personalities who leveraged their creativity, charisma, or niche to attract and retain loyal fans. Examples are Elvish Yadav, CarryMinati, Mumbaikher Nikhil, Technical Guru, Faisu and many more.

The influence on society

The rise and evolution of influencers have had a profound influence on society, both positive and negative. On one hand, influencers have enabled more democratization, diversification, and dialogue in the digital space. They have given voice and visibility to more people, especially those who are marginalized, underrepresented, or oppressed. They have also provided more choice and variety to consumers, who can now access more information, entertainment, or inspiration from different sources, perspectives, or styles. They have also fostered more interaction and engagement among users, who can now communicate, collaborate, or co-create with influencers or other users. We have examples of KK Creates, Adarsh Gupta, Physicswallah, etc. as an example who have contributed greatly towards the positive development of a society.

But again, as every sphere has some negative aspects, this section has too. Various so-called influencers used to play with public emotions and misuse their publicity. The recent example of Poonam Pandey is indeed a great example. How she fooled millions by faking her death in the name of awareness shows her audacity in manipulating and misusing people’s emotions.

Some influencers misuse their power and end up doing violence. In a recent viral video, Elvish Yadav was seen slapping a man in a restaurant for some unclear reasons. While Aditya Narayan, in a concert, in Bhilai, was seen throwing a fan’s phone and slapping him.

The scope of being an influencer

The future of being an influencer is both promising and challenging. On one hand, influencers have more opportunities and resources to grow and succeed in the digital space. They have more platforms, tools, and formats to create and distribute their content. They have more data, analytics, and feedback to measure and improve their performance. They have more partners, sponsors, and networks to support and collaborate with them. They have more revenue, recognition, and impact to reward and motivate them. On the other hand, influencers also face more competition and regulation in the digital space. They have more rivals, alternatives, and substitutes to challenge and threaten them. They have more standards, rules, and laws to comply with and adhere to them. They have more risks, crises, and scandals to avoid and manage with them.

It’s always essential for us as a human being to check the authenticity and credibility of the person to whom we are personifying and glorying. As a public, we should make sure not to hate a person to whom we have loved once. Hence, it’s the need of the hour why we should follow and support some individuals wisely.
