What is One Nation One Election Bill? All you need to know
New Delhi | December 18: The Lower House (Lok Sabha) of the Parliament on Tuesday formally introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024′ and ‘The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024’ which aims to hold simultaneous elections to both Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This bill is called as the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill.
However, the bill witnessed a long 90 minute debate between the opposition and the Union government after which it was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for scrutiny.
A total of 263 Member of Parliaments (MPs) from the ruling side were present to favour the introduction of the bill in the Lok Sabha however, 198 opposition MPs were against it.
The opposition claimed that One Nation One Election’ bill is against the spirit of Indian federalism and the Constitution and it is a part of conspiracy that secretly aims to bring in dictatorship by stealth.
It is to be noted that this bill marks the first step towards fulfilling the BJP’s promise during election of conducting electoral processes simultaneously under the “One Nation, One Election” framework.

According to media reports, the actual simultaneous election procedure won’t begin until 2034. The bill proposes amending Articles 83 (duration of Houses of Parliament), 172, and 327 (authority of Parliament to make laws with respect to elections to Legislatures) and enclosure of Article 82(A) (simultaneous elections to the House of the People and all Legislative Assemblies).
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal while speaking in the Lok Sabha, said that this bill aims to unify the electoral process of Parliament and legislative assemblies, but it is not necessary that voting would take place on the same day, as it can be held in multiple phases.
Currently, Parliamentary and Assembly elections of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim are held simultaneously while those of other states are scheduled for other time, depending on the completion of their terms. For example, Delhi Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in February 2025, Bihar Legislative Assembly elections in November-December 2025. West Bengal elections are likely to be held in 20026.

One Nation One Election’ bill was approved by the Cabinet last week and it seeks to pave the way for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across India.
It is to be noted that during the voting session, around 20 BJP MPs were absent from the Parliament, even after the party had issued a three line whip to all its members to be present in the Parliament.
Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Giriraj Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and CR Patil were among nearly 20 BJP MPs who were absent during the division for the introduction of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill.
